Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of the Cinnamomen tree.  It has used dating as far back to Ancient Egypt. There are two types of cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon "TRUE" cinnamon and Cassia cinnamon, which is the common variety we see in stores. The compound cinnamaldehyde is responsible for most cinnamon's powerful effects on health and metabolism.

1) Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants. As we have learned with turmeric, antioxidants protect us from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. The polyphenols are one of the powerful antioxidants in cinnamon.

2) Helps to keep chronic inflammation at bay.

3) Cinnamon can be beneficial to preventing heart disease by reducing cholesterol levels, such as LDL's and triglycerides, and also keeps HDL levels stable. In animal studies it has been shown to reduce blood pressure (something to consider). In diabetes Type 2 it can help to keep blood sugar levels normal or even lower your blood sugar and it also reduce insulin resistance so insulin can do it's job.

4) Beneficial effects on Neurogenerative Diseases with special attention to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. Cinnamon protects against the buildup of the protein tau that leads to Alzheimer's. In lab trials with Parkinson's Disease it helped to protect neurons, normalize neurotransmitter levels and improve motor function (something to consider).

5) May be protective against Cancer. In lab studies Cinnamon reduces the growth of cancer cells, the formation of blood vessels in tumors, and because it is toxic to cancer cells. Also in lab testing cinnamon detoxifies enzymes in the colon that protects against cancer growth. Cinnamon also activates antioxidants in human colon cells.

6) Cinnamaldehyde (the main active component) may help to to fight various infections. Cinnamon oil may effectively treat respiratory tract infections caused by fungi and also can inhibit growth of Listeria and Salmonella. Cinnamon can also help to control bad breath and prevent tooth decay.

7) Cinnamon from the Cassia varieties may help fight against HIV-1, the most common strain in humans. Cinnamon was the most effective medicinal plant, out of 69 varieties, to be the most effective treatment against HIV-1.

8)It's better to use Ceylon "TRUE" cinnamon. Cassia can not be taken in large doses because it contains a large amount of the compound coumarin, Ceylon is much lower in coumarin.
